About this Product
Larkmoor City Council's Neighbourhood Services team handles potholes, broken streetlights, missed bin collections, graffiti and dumped waste. Citizens report issues by phone or shared inbox but receive no reference number, so they must call again for updates. Around a third of contact centre calls are status enquiries.
Build Larkmoor Citizen Desk, a public web app using React, FastAPI and PostgreSQL. Citizens submit street issues through a validated form and receive a reference number (e.g., SR2026-000007) and target resolution date. They can track requests by reference number and view status, target date and a timeline of council notes, without exposing personal details. Case officers manage requests through a fixed lifecycle: Submitted, In review, Scheduled, Resolved and Not actioned, using FastAPI's /docs interface.
Starting from a starter project with the theme, scripts and tests in place, implement the business rules and both screens.
Practise Pydantic validation, consistent JSON errors, REST verbs and status codes (201 with Location, 404, 409, 422 and 503), parameterised SQL and transactions using psycopg 3, and React forms and data loading with useState, useEffect, fetch and React Router.
Both screens must handle loading, empty, error and success states, work at 390 px phone width and support keyboard navigation. Load settings from .env files, support database connections with or without a password, and provide actionable connection-check errors for Windows and macOS.
Deliver one end-to-end feature across UI, API and database, backed by pytest and Vitest suites, screenshots and a README. Include a short note tracing a request through the stack, demonstrating the kind of first full-stack ticket a junior engineer should deliver and explain in an interview.
