About this Product
Ferncross Council's licensing counter faces double booking and lost confirmations during demand surges and service failures. They need a booking system that maintains consistency and reliably delivers appointment confirmations.
In this lab you build Ferncross Slotline: two FastAPI microservices (Booking Service and Notification Service) backed by PostgreSQL and Redis. Your booking service accepts appointment requests with idempotency keys, uses atomic transactions and Redis caching to prevent overbooking, and publishes confirmation events. Your notification service consumes those events from a Redis Stream with deduplication, retry logic and dead-letter handling, ensuring confirmations arrive even after failures.
You practise advanced production patterns: transactional outbox for reliable event publishing, Redis consumer groups with automatic recovery, fault injection and observability through JSON logs and Prometheus metrics. You handle failures at every layer—database, cache, and service timeouts. By the end you have a tested, fault tolerant booking system you can deploy and explain in a senior backend engineering interview, and a reference architecture for building resilient microservices in your portfolio.
