Build a production-style, real-time order processing pipeline with Apache Kafka and PostgreSQL — from event generation through validation, dead-letter handling, and analytics-ready persistence
Business Overview:
The OrderStream capstone challenges you to build an end-to-end, real-time order processing pipeline on Apache Kafka. Working from a professional BRD, you'll simulate an e-commerce order flow: events are generated continuously, published to Kafka, consumed and validated, and persisted to PostgreSQL as analytics-ready records — while invalid records are isolated in a Dead Letter Queue instead of blocking the pipeline. Every capability maps to a core Kafka concept. Deliberately container-free (native or managed Kafka and PostgreSQL), it keeps the Kafka concepts front and centre.

- 3-partition orders_topic and a dedicated Dead Letter Queue (orders_dlq_topic)
- Consumer groups, manual offset commits, rebalancing, and clean restart/recovery
- At-least-once delivery with idempotent writes enforced by order_id uniqueness
- No Docker — native or managed/cloud Kafka and PostgreSQL, Python 3.9+
Learning Outcomes:

- Design Kafka topics and partitions for parallel, scalable consumption
- Build a keyed JSON producer and a validating consumer under a named consumer group
- Implement Dead Letter Queue routing for invalid or malformed events
- Guarantee at-least-once processing with controlled offset commits and safe restarts
- Persist validated records to PostgreSQL with duplicate protection
- Demonstrate consumer scaling, rebalancing, and end-to-end verification
